William G. Moeckel
BackgroundMoeckel & Co., Inc. is the vehicle through which Bill has led numerous hospitality industry real estate and finance initiatives over the past 25 years. He is a retired general partner of the Thayer Lodging Group which sponsors and manages private investment partnerships investing in US hotel real estate. Acting in the capacity of Chief Investment & Acquisitions Officer, he was responsible for identifying and negotiating the funds’ hotel acquisitions. Thayer investors included the principals, pension funds and other large pools of domestic and offshore capital including General Electric Corporation, the Government of Singapore Investment Management Corporation, AIG Realty, Wells Fargo Bank, Textron, Colgate University Endowment Fund, Marriott Corporation and the pension funds of UPS and Boeing.
Following a recapitalization of the funds, Mr. Moeckel relinquished his day-to-day Thayer responsibilities and relocated to South Carolina. An advisory engagement with Chaffin Light Associates to formulate new marketing initiatives for their southeastern developments led to their formation of Spring Island Realty, which he led as President from 2001 to 2003. In this role, he augmented his significant hospitality industry experience with a two-year immersion into the restructuring, sales and marketing of high-end recreational land developments with industry leaders Jim Chaffin and Jim Light, developers of Spring Island, The Roaring Fork Club in Aspen and The Chechessee Creek Club.
More recently, he has been responsible for securing over $160 million of new hotel development and acquisitions in the Historic Districts of Charleston and Savannah. He also serves on the Advisory Board of SIB Fixed Cost Reduction, an exciting young Charleston-based company specializing in reducing external expenses for clients with large facilities or multiple locations, such as hotel companies, restaurant groups, convenience stores, hospitals, universities, government agencies and Fortune 500 companies.
Previously in his career, he served as Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer for Embassy Suites, Inc., responsible for worldwide development, franchising and asset sales; as Senior Vice President & Director of Hotel Development for The Landmarks Group, an Atlanta-based commercial real estate developer; as an advisor to TIAA/CREF on the yearlong restructuring of their $1.6 billion hotel loan portfolio; as a Director of Acquisitions and Dispositions for Holiday Corporation and as a Principal with Laventhol & Horwath, responsible for their hospitality real estate consulting practice in the southeast.
He was a member of the Promus Hotels Management Board, the Embassy Suites and Hampton Inns Franchise Committees and was Chairman of the Embassy Suites Owners Association. From its formation in 1989 through 1995, Moeckel served as an independent director of Metric Income Trust Series, a San-Francisco-based Real Estate Investment Trust sponsored by SSR Realty Advisors and the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.
Professional affiliations include the Cornell Hotel Society and the Urban Land Institute, where he served as Vice Chairman of the Hotel Development Council and as a member of the Recreational Land Development Council. He is a past president of the ISHC (International Society of Hotel Consultants). Moeckel is also active as a counselor and former board member at Camp Sunshine, a nationally recognized program for kids with cancer. He is a graduate of the Defense Language Institute and Cornell University and served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam in 1968.
